Spanish Back-to-School Teaching Ideas
The Pigeon Has to Go to School is wonderful book written by one of my favorite children’s authors, Mo Willems. The Pigeon Has to Go to School is about a pigeon that exhibits all the typical worries and excuses kids have about going to school. Told mostly in speech balloons, the pigeon’s imagination runs wild with excuses.
The book is not written in Spanish, but don’t let that deter you from reading it to your children. I’m sure you’ll do an awesome job translating it yourself. I do it all the time! As a bilingual Spanish community we’ve come a long way having authentic Spanish books available to our young children, but once in a while you run across some wonderful books that are not yet available in the Spanish language. When this happens…I just translate it myself. The children enjoy it just the same!
This humorous book will extend children’s learning! The following activities were inspired from this wonderful book!
Children create their own Pigeons
Children illustrate and write about why the Pigeon is going to love school
Children can vote on a T-graph if they love school or not, and then view the data and tally the points
Have a discussion with the children about all the emotions kids have about going to school. Then have them graph their results.
