Having fun with shapes!
Children love learning about math concepts when they can touch, construct, and use their senses. I love this fun activity because children can work on simple shapes and then move on to building and constructing more difficult shapes. It’s very important when working with a mixed aged of children that you incorporate materials that the children feel some level of success. As they learn more complicated concepts and skills you can easily adjust the level of rigor.
When we learn about shapes we like to talk and discuss:
Their attributes
How are they the same? How are they different? How is a square like a rectangle?
What if…?
Design a…?
Invent a new shape
What happens when…?
Challenge yourself to ask the children those questions that are on top of the Bloom’s list, and give the children time to think. Be patient, children take time answering back so be sure you give them ample time to think and talk. Sometimes they need little a little help, so offer some hints and assistance when necessary.
